Hindustan Times · politics

Delhi was turned into a fortress with 41,000 security personnel deployed to prevent a planned protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The clampdown resulted in the detention of 7,000 people, including former chief ministers and leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Sporadic protests continued despite the detentions, with stadiums and halls used as temporary detention centres. The Supreme Court will hold a special sitting today to hear pleas challenging the detentions and curbs on transport, prompted by a petition from Trinamool Congress MP Menaka Guruswamy.
