Rupee Surges As RBI Curbs Raise Hedging Costs For Banks
Economic Times Markets · stocks
The Indian rupee strengthened by over half a percentage point on Tuesday, following a similar gain the previous day. This surge occurred as Indian banks began assessing the impact of new derivative contract regulations imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). These curbs aim to support the rupee, curb capital outflows, and manage imported inflation. The RBI's directive requires banks to maintain a foreign exchange risk reserve of up to 20% on derivative contracts, making hedging prohibitively expensive. These measures follow other weekend directives restricting speculative trading.
