The Black Robin, once on the brink of extinction in New Zealand, has been named Bird of the Year for 2026. In 1980, only five of these birds remained, with just one fertile female capable of reproduction. Dedicated conservation efforts have since increased their population to approximately 350 adult birds. The Black Robin, also known as Karure, secured over 25,500 votes in the election, surpassing other native species.
