French authorities have confirmed the first-ever human infection with the Shamonda virus in a patient who died in Lyon earlier in October. The Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that there is currently no identifiable health risk to the general population. Shamonda is an orthobunyavirus primarily spread by insects to animals like cattle. While previously considered non-transmissible to humans, this case marks a significant development. The virus has recently been detected in animals across several European countries, including Germany, Switzerland, and parts of France.
