Switzerland's supreme court has upheld a 20-year jail sentence for former Liberian rebel commander Alieu Kosiah. However, the court overturned a conviction for crimes against humanity, citing the principle of non-retroactivity. The Federal Supreme Court rejected Kosiah's appeal against his conviction for war crimes committed between 1993 and 1995. This marks the first war crimes conviction by a Swiss civilian court and the first conviction of a Liberian for war crimes during the country's civil wars. Kosiah, arrested in 2014, had settled in Switzerland in the late 1990s.
