In 1904, the Duke of Bedford gifted six Himalayan tahr to New Zealand for hunting purposes; only five survived the journey and were released near Mount Cook. A 2017 study tracked their impact, finding that these goat-like animals, native to India and Nepal, now occupy about 9,600 square kilometers of the Southern Alps. Despite population reductions from commercial hunting in the 1970s, numbers have since rebounded, with an estimated 29,800 tahr in 2023.
