Hungary has publicly released thousands of communist-era secret police records, including the names of former informants who spied on citizens. Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the searchable online database, fulfilling a promise to address the country's repressive past. While communism ended in 1989, attempts to open these files were repeatedly stalled. Magyar urged dignity and humanity in reviewing the documents, acknowledging that many families will face difficult information about deceased relatives. A second batch of files is expected in February.
