Shimla Police Use Water Cannons, Lathi-Charge On UGC Act Protesters

Shimla police used water cannons and lathi-charged members of the Rashtriya Devbhoomi Party protesting outside the secretariat. The protesters demanded the withdrawal of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act and the enactment of a law for the protection of Swarn Samaj. Their demonstration followed a 600-km, 21-day march across Himachal Pradesh. The party aimed to submit a memorandum to the chief minister, but police intervened as they approached the secretariat.
