India Proposes Stricter Microbial Contamination Norms For Pharma Manufacturing

Business Standard · business

The Indian government is proposing to amend the Drugs Rules, 1945, to align microbial contamination limits in sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing areas with WHO standards. Grade A clean areas, critical for handling exposed products, will now require "no growth" of microorganisms, a tightening from the previous limit of less than one colony-forming unit. This move aims to enhance the quality and safety of sterile pharmaceutical products manufactured in India. Stakeholders have 30 days to submit objections and suggestions on the draft notification.
