Former FDLR Fighters Return to Rwanda Facing Rehabilitation Challenges
Al Jazeera · world
Jean Claude Hategekimana, a former FDLR captain, returned to Rwanda on February 24 after fighting in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He feared returning would be a suicide mission, as FDLR members were told they would be killed. However, upon arrival, he found the group's claims to be false. The Mutobo Demobilisation and Reintegration Centre in northern Rwanda, established in 2001, helps former fighters like Hategekimana reintegrate into civilian life. The program offers medical care, psychosocial support, and civic education to rebuild confidence and facilitate reconnection with families.
