Indian Temples Offer Non-Veg Offerings To Goddess Durga
Aaj Tak · spirituality
While many Hindu traditions emphasize vegetarianism during Navratri, several temples in India have unique traditions of offering non-vegetarian food to the Goddess. At Vimala Temple in Puri, Odisha, a goat is sacrificed, and its meat is cooked with fish from the Markandeya tank and offered to the deity. Similarly, Tarapith Temple in West Bengal offers mutton and fish, while Kamakhya Temple in Assam offers goat and fish, though without garlic or onion. These practices highlight diverse regional interpretations of devotion and tradition within Hinduism.
