California Scientists Grow Kelp in Lab, Planting Young Forests Back into Ocean

Times of India · environment

California scientists are successfully cultivating bull kelp in laboratory tanks, achieving densities of up to 74,000 spores per millilitre. This intensive lab work aims to restore Northern California's kelp forests, which have been severely damaged by warming seas and the proliferation of purple sea urchins. Researchers nurture the young kelp through various developmental stages before transplanting them onto special twine. The first juvenile kelp plants have now been successfully moved from controlled lab conditions to the ocean, with early signs of growth observed.
