Maharashtra Faces Severe Groundwater Crisis Soil Moisture Also Declining
Times of India · environment
Groundwater levels have fallen below normal in 223 of Maharashtra's 353 talukas as of October, the highest since 2018. Of these, 42 talukas are classified as severe, with many in Marathwada, Latur, and Beed facing extreme conditions. This groundwater drought is exacerbated by declining soil moisture, with satellite data showing regions below a 10-year average. Low soil moisture could significantly impact upcoming Rabi sowing, as insufficient residual moisture hinders crop growth and groundwater is a critical secondary irrigation source.
