Mantua, a small Italian city-state, achieved cultural prestige through the refined tastes of the ruling Gonzaga family. Ludovico II Gonzaga patronized artist Andrea Mantegna, who spent four decades as court artist. Mantegna's Camera Picta, completed between 1465 and 1474 in the Palazzo Ducale, remains in Mantua. This painted chamber features unidealized portraits of the Gonzaga family and courtiers under an illusionistic ceiling with a trompe l’oeil oculus. The room's walls depict civic scenes and opulent textiles, combining fresco and secco techniques.
