Europe's Summer Heatwave Caused 50,000 Deaths And $18.9 Billion GDP Loss

Business Standard · environment

Europe's extreme summer heat resulted in an estimated 50,000 deaths across cities, the highest on record, and reduced EU GDP by approximately 0.17% or $18.9 billion from April to September. A study from Imperial College London found that nearly two-thirds of these heat-related deaths were attributable to climate change. Bloomberg Economics reported the economic hit was two-and-a-half times the decade's average loss for the period. This highlights Europe's growing vulnerability to rising temperatures, with heatwaves beginning in May and continuing into September, impacting vital infrastructure and economies.
