Toddler Brain Activity Differs When Reading Books With Parents vs. Watching Videos

TOI - Lifestyle · lifestyle

A Northwestern University study found that toddlers exhibit distinct brain activity associated with attention and social engagement when interacting with a parent during book reading, compared to watching a movie. Researchers tracked 49 toddlers aged 24-44 months using EEG caps, observing brain waves during story time and screen viewing. Alpha activity decreased and theta activity increased during social engagement, indicating a different neural response. The findings suggest that interactive reading offers unique reciprocal engagement not typically found in passive video consumption.
