Louisiana's Wetland Restoration Project Terminated After Initial Approval

Hindustan Times · environment

Louisiana's ambitious Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion project, designed to rebuild over 13,000 acres of sinking wetlands by reconnecting the Mississippi River, has been terminated. Initially approved in September 2022 and breaking ground in August 2023, the project faced challenges including federal permit suspension and ongoing litigation. The authorized budget was significantly reduced from $2.26 billion to $618.52 million. This termination halts a first-of-its-kind, innovative coastal habitat restoration effort aimed at mitigating damage from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and rising sea levels.
