Ex-Minister Scheuer Faces Perjury Trial Over Toll Scheme

A perjury trial has begun for former German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer and ex-state secretary Gerhard Schulz. They are accused of lying to a parliamentary committee regarding a failed highway toll scheme for foreign motorists. The scheme, devised by Scheuer's party, was declared illegal by the European Court of Justice in 2019. Despite this, contracts were signed, leading to the German government paying €243 million in damages to the involved companies.
