Bone Discovery Rewrites British Ice Age History

In 1986, Eve Roberts' discovery of large bones near Condover, Shropshire, led to a significant rewrite of Ice Age history in Britain. Quarry workers found unusual bones, initially mistaken for those of large horses or elephants. Roberts' call to the Shropshire Museum Service prompted an investigation by palaeontologist Russell Coope. Excavations unearthed hundreds of mammoth bones, including a nearly complete skeleton. Radiocarbon tests revealed the mammoths were around 14,000 years old, much younger than previously believed, indicating they survived in Britain thousands of years longer.
