India Needs Employment-Intensive Growth, Not Just Fast Growth: Ex-RBI Chief
Business Standard · business
Former RBI Governor D. Subbarao stated that sustaining India's economic growth requires stronger private investment, labour-intensive manufacturing, better human capital, and deeper global integration. He emphasized that the challenge lies not just in achieving rapid growth, but in making it productive and employment-intensive. Subbarao noted that while India's first-quarter growth of 7.8% shows resilience, the economy's composition of growth, favouring capital-intensive industries, is not generating enough jobs for the large workforce. This macroeconomic concern can constrain consumption demand if growth doesn't translate into broad-based income increases.
