Supreme Court Allows IT Assessments for Former CJI's Sons

The Supreme Court has permitted income-tax assessments for the sons of former Chief Justice of India YK Sabharwal, Chetan and Nitin Sabharwal. The assessments relate to share transactions in 2010 that funded their purchase of a prime property on Delhi's Sikandra Road. The apex court upheld reassessment notices issued by the Income Tax Department for assessment years 2008-09 and 2009-10. The court found the department had valid 'reason to believe' that income chargeable to tax had escaped assessment based on a probe report.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने पूर्व मुख्य न्यायाधीश भारत के वाईके सभरवाल के बेटों, चेतन और नितिन सभरवाल के लिए आयकर आकलन की अनुमति दे दी है। ये आकलन 2010 में हुए शेयर सौदों से संबंधित हैं, जिनसे दिल्ली के सिकंदरा रोड पर एक प्रमुख संपत्ति खरीदी गई थी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने आकलन वर्ष 2008-09 और 2009-10 के लिए आयकर विभाग द्वारा जारी पुनर्मूल्यांकन नोटिस को बरकरार रखा। कोर्ट ने पाया कि विभाग के पास यह मानने का वैध 'कारण' था कि एक जांच रिपोर्ट के आधार पर कर योग्य आय का मूल्यांकन नहीं हुआ है।
