Cricket Law Explained: Bouncer Beats Keeper, Flies Over Ropes, But Only 5 Runs Awarded
Hindustan Times · sports
A bizarre incident in the Canada Super60 semi-final saw a bouncer bowled by Ali Khan sail over the batter and wicketkeeper, clearing the boundary rope without touching the bat. While it physically travelled the distance for a six, the umpire correctly awarded only five runs. According to MCC laws, a six is only awarded if the ball is struck by the bat before crossing the boundary. In this case, four runs were given for the boundary and one for the wide, as the ball never made contact with the bat.
