A Bengaluru tenant has successfully recovered his Rs 80,000 security deposit after his landlord refused to return it, claiming the tenant failed to provide adequate notice and that the refund was contingent on finding a new tenant. The consumer commission found no evidence of damages or outstanding dues presented by the landlord. Consequently, the commission ordered the landlord to refund the full deposit with 9% annual interest and pay Rs 10,000 in litigation costs, deeming the withholding of funds a deficiency in service.
