Green Patches Re-appear on Taj Mahal Walls, ASI on Alert

Hindustan Times · environment

Green patches have reappeared on the inlay work of the Taj Mahal's northern walls, raising concerns for Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials. This recurring phenomenon, identified as an 'attack' by the 'Goeldichironomus' insect, has been a concern since 2016. Scientists believe the insect thrives on pollution in the Yamuna River, whose water quality is again under scrutiny. While the marks can be washed away, repeated interventions are detrimental to the monument's sensitive surface. ASI plans an extensive manual cleaning drive on Friday.
