Elephant Carcasses Boost Soil Nitrogen 3,000 Times, Transform African Grasslands for Years

Times of India · science

New research reveals that elephant carcasses significantly enrich soil, boosting nitrogen levels up to 3,000 times higher than expected at fresh sites. This nutrient enrichment transforms African grasslands, influencing plant growth and attracting grazing animals for at least eight years after the animal's death. The study, inspired by the death of a tusker named Alexander in South Africa's Kruger National Park, highlights the lasting ecological footprint of these large mammals.
