China's decades-long Green Great Wall project has successfully combatted desertification, shrinking affected land by over 1,000 sq km annually. Millions of laborers have planted saplings and used straw checkerboards to stabilize sand dunes. This long-term environmental restoration effort has significantly increased forest cover. However, scientists caution that sustained local involvement and adaptation are crucial to maintain these gains against ongoing desertification challenges.

चीन की दशकों पुरानी 'ग्रीन ग्रेट वॉल' परियोजना रेगिस्तान को बढ़ने से रोकने में कामयाब रही है। इससे हर साल 1,000 वर्ग किलोमीटर से ज़्यादा ज़मीन को बचाया गया है। लाखों मज़दूरों ने पेड़ लगाए और रेत के टीलों को स्थिर करने के लिए पुआल के चौखानों का इस्तेमाल किया। इस लंबे समय के पर्यावरण सुधार से जंगल का रकबा काफी बढ़ा है। लेकिन वैज्ञानिक कहते हैं कि इन फायदों को बनाए रखने के लिए लोगों की लगातार भागीदारी और बदलते हालात के हिसाब से काम करना ज़रूरी है।
