Telangana CM Urges Farmers to Avoid Water-Intensive Crops Amid El Nino

The Hindu · india

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has appealed to farmers to switch to less water-intensive crops due to the looming El Nino impact and deficit rainfall. Preliminary estimates suggest over 13 lakh acres of crops could be affected. State reservoirs currently hold 209 tmcft of water, significantly less than last year's 450 tmcft. Farmers' increased use of 33 lakh pumpsets has led to record energy consumption, straining power generation. The government is seeking Central assistance to manage potential water and power shortages over the next eight to ten months.
