Ooty Lake Reverts To Polluted State Less Than Two Years After ₹7.51 Crore Clean-Up

The Hindu · india

Less than two years after a ₹7.51 crore clean-up operation, Ooty lake is once again heavily polluted, with water hyacinth covering large areas, indicating severe eutrophication. Conservationists blame the uncontrolled runoff of untreated sewage and fertilisers for the nutrient pollution. The unscientific clean-up also destroyed sand banks and reed beds, leading to a drastic reduction in the lake's bird population. In 2023, over 600 birds of 25 species were recorded, but numbers fell to 270 birds of 13 species in 2025 and remained low in 2026.
