Doctor Explains True Meaning of Psychological Trauma Amid Casual Usage

Hindustan Times · health

On World Mental Health Day, consultant psychiatrist Dr. Megha Agarwal highlighted that the term 'trauma' is often used too casually in everyday conversations, especially on social media. While difficult experiences like breakups or workplace stress can be emotionally hurtful, they don't necessarily constitute psychological trauma. True psychological trauma involves an overwhelming experience that impairs coping abilities and significantly alters thoughts, feelings, or behavior, often stemming from abuse, violence, or feeling threatened. Understanding this distinction is crucial for recognizing when professional support may be needed, differentiating it from everyday emotional distress.
