The Sensex closed down 125.56 points, while the Nifty fell 87.65 points, with the latter even touching 22,500 during trading. A widespread sell-off saw 3,275 shares decline compared to only 797 advancing. Midcap and banking stocks were particularly hard-hit, with the midcap index dropping over 2 percent and the banking index losing 638 points.
