The Supreme Court has suggested a novel approach to recover unpaid traffic fines, proposing that outstanding amounts be added to electricity bills. Justice J.B. Pardiwala noted that simply issuing e-challans is insufficient for recovery, with states and union territories needing to collect ₹45,000 crore in fines. To enforce payment, the court recommended blocking vehicle registration renewals, duplicate certificate issuance, and fitness certificates until all challans are cleared. Additionally, vehicles with unpaid fines should be blacklisted on transport portals, and their ownership transfers blocked.
