Two-Thirds of India's Airports Face Very Low Utilisation: Air India CCTO

Business Standard · business

Nipun Aggarwal, Air India's Chief Commercial Officer, stated that two-thirds of India's 160 airports have very low utilisation, with only 40 operating at 70-80 per cent capacity. He attributed this to inadequate regional connectivity and suggested airlines deploy regional jets to connect Tier-2 cities. Aggarwal emphasised the need to better utilise existing airport infrastructure and improve air connectivity beyond major metropolitan centres. He also noted that high taxation hinders air travel affordability, preventing disruptive growth in the aviation sector.
