Contractors Shun Road Works in Kerala Local Bodies Amidst Rate Standoff

Contractors are reluctant to undertake road works in local bodies across Thiruvananthapuram district due to the Local Self Government Department's failure to revise civil works rates. As many as 42 road works in rural local bodies have failed to attract bidders even after being tendered thrice. The rising cost of materials like bitumen, exacerbated by West Asian conflicts, has made existing rates unviable. The department is now considering a proposal to permit excess costs, similar to Public Works Department orders, to address contractors' demands and pending projects.

तिरुवनंतपुरम जिले में स्थानीय निकायों में ठेकेदार सड़क निर्माण का काम करने से हिचकिचा रहे हैं क्योंकि स्थानीय स्वशासन विभाग ने सिविल कार्यों की दरों को संशोधित नहीं किया है। ग्रामीण स्थानीय निकायों में 42 सड़क निर्माण कार्यों के लिए तीन बार निविदा निकालने के बाद भी बोली लगाने वाले नहीं मिले हैं। बिटुमेन जैसी सामग्री की बढ़ती लागत, जो पश्चिम एशियाई संघर्षों के कारण और बढ़ गई है, ने मौजूदा दरों को अव्यवहारिक बना दिया है। विभाग अब ठेकेदारों की मांगों और लंबित परियोजनाओं को पूरा करने के लिए लोक निर्माण विभाग के आदेशों की तरह अतिरिक्त लागत की अनुमति देने के प्रस्ताव पर विचार कर रहा है।
