Mayors Demand Real Powers, Timely Audits From Centre

Municipal leaders at the National Urban Conclave have urged the Centre to grant mayors genuine executive powers, stating that proposed reforms like directly elected mayors with fixed tenures will be ineffective without them. Rajkot mayor Nehal Shukla highlighted the critical need for timely financial audits, noting that delays of up to eight years allow financial irregularities to persist unchecked. Bhubaneswar mayor Sulochana Das echoed these concerns, explaining that mayors lack control over executive officials, hindering effective governance despite public expectations.

नेशनल अर्बन कॉन्क्लेव में नगर निगम के नेताओं ने केंद्र से मेयरों को असली कार्यकारी शक्तियां देने की मांग की है। उन्होंने कहा कि सीधे चुने गए मेयरों और निश्चित कार्यकाल जैसी प्रस्तावित सुधारें उनके बिना बेअसर रहेंगी। राजकोट की मेयर नेहाल शुक्ला ने समय पर वित्तीय ऑडिट की गंभीर जरूरत पर जोर दिया। उन्होंने कहा कि आठ साल तक की देरी से वित्तीय अनियमितताएं बिना रोक-टोक चलती रहती हैं। भुवनेश्वर की मेयर सुलोचना दास ने भी यही चिंता जताई। उन्होंने बताया कि मेयरों का कार्यकारी अधिकारियों पर कोई नियंत्रण नहीं है, जिससे जनता की उम्मीदों के बावजूद प्रभावी शासन में बाधा आती है।
