A Michigan collector purchased a Gertrude Abercrombie painting of seashells for just $30 at an estate sale. Recognizing the signature, the collector authenticated the 1951 artwork, titled 'Alderman Merriam’s Shells,' by consulting an exhibition catalogue and an Abercrombie scholar. The painting, which had been missing for 75 years, was recently auctioned in New York. It sold for a record $1,352,600, far exceeding the auction house's estimate of $150,000 to $250,000. This marks the first time an Abercrombie work has surpassed the $1 million mark.
