Goa Acquires 16th-Century Kalbhairav Sculpture From Mandrem Temple

Times of India · interesting

Goa's directorate of archaeology has acquired a 16th-17th century Kalbhairav sculpture from Mandrem, Pernem, after its temple committee replaced the original idol. The schist stone sculpture, measuring 52cm by 35cm, depicts the four-armed deity with a dog and human figure. Although Bhairava sculptures are common in North India, this Goan find is notable for its accompanying figures. The department will restore, preserve, and display the sculpture in a museum for public viewing and research.
