El Niño Strengthens, Narrowing Coral Reef Recovery Windows

Marine heatwaves are increasingly hitting coral reefs before they can fully recover, raising the risk of long-term decline. Since 1998, strong El Niño events have coincided with global coral bleaching, with each event impacting more reef areas. The UN warns that coral reefs are facing new bleaching events before recovering from previous ones. Experts note that reefs once had decades to recover, but now have only five or six years, with many reefs affected by unprecedented heatwaves.
