IITs See Significant Rise in Women Students Thanks to Supernumerary Seats Scheme
Hindustan Times · education
The Supernumerary Seats Scheme (SSS), introduced in 2018, has dramatically increased the proportion of women studying engineering at India's 23 IITs. Between 2013 and 2020, women comprised only 7-9% of BTech students, but this figure rose to nearly 20% by 2020 and has remained at that level. The scheme creates additional "female-only" seats to meet a 20% representation target, benefiting SC/ST women as well. This initiative is also motivating more women to pursue engineering degrees at the prestigious institutions.
