In response to the drought's impact on farmers and the rural economy, police in east Vidarbha are planning a crackdown on illegal moneylenders. Inspector General Sandip Patil has directed district police to maintain zero tolerance towards illegal lending and borrower harassment, especially in drought-hit areas. The move aims to prevent debt-related suicides, a significant issue in Vidarbha's history. Police will monitor moneylenders charging excessive interest or using coercive recovery methods. Stations will display contact numbers for distressed individuals, and police will also monitor related property crimes and livestock disputes.
