Gujarat Mandates Mental Health Support and Counsellors in Schools

Hindustan Times · education

The Gujarat government has implemented new regulations requiring secondary and higher secondary schools to establish mental health support systems to combat student stress and prevent suicides. These measures include forming School Wellness Teams, peer-support networks, and appointing qualified counsellors. The initiative, applicable to Classes 9 to 12, aligns with Supreme Court directives and adopts NCERT's UMMEED guidelines. Schools with over 100 students must have a dedicated counsellor, while smaller ones need external referral arrangements. The goal is to prioritize students' mental well-being alongside academic performance.
