UP Village Observes Mourning on Dussehra, Not Celebration

In Gagul village, Uttar Pradesh, Dussehra is observed with mourning instead of celebration, a tradition continuing for over 150 years. This somber observance stems from the execution of nine freedom fighters from the village on Dussehra day during the 1857 revolt. Their sacrifice is commemorated annually, with villagers paying respects at a banyan tree where the fighters were hanged. The village considers this tree a symbol of their ancestors' martyrdom.

उत्तर प्रदेश के गगुल गांव में दशहरा मनाने की परंपरा अलग है। यहां लोग जश्न नहीं मनाते, बल्कि मातम करते हैं। यह रिवाज 150 साल से भी ज्यादा समय से चला आ रहा है। ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि 1857 के विद्रोह के दौरान दशहरा के दिन गांव के नौ स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों को फांसी दी गई थी। हर साल उनके बलिदान को याद किया जाता है। ग्रामीण उस बरगद के पेड़ पर श्रद्धांजलि देते हैं जहां इन सेनानियों को फांसी दी गई थी। गांव वाले इस पेड़ को अपने पूर्वजों की शहादत का प्रतीक मानते हैं।
