Google Severs Ties With Partner After 1.3 Million Devices Turned Into Spy Gadgets
Times of India · technology
Google has cut ties with its Android manufacturing partner, Videostrong Co., after discovering it secretly built a backdoor into over 1.3 million devices. These devices were allegedly turned into a botnet for malicious activities, including ad fraud and data theft, without user knowledge. Videostrong, a Shenzhen-based company, reportedly sold access to criminal groups who installed further malware. Google has disrupted the botnet's command-and-control infrastructure and banned Videostrong from the certified Android ecosystem, tightening its review processes.
