Vietnam's high-tech ambitions face an electricity crisis amid rising costs and policy challenges
Hindustan Times · business
Vietnam aims to transition to high-tech manufacturing, but its ambitious plans are hampered by an electricity shortage. The country, recently achieving upper-middle-income status, faces rising wages that threaten its manufacturing sector. While Vietnam plans to increase liquefied natural gas (LNG) use to 10% by 2030, projects are stalling due to high costs and global price hikes. Political challenges, including electricity subsidies and the need for foreign expertise for LNG plants, create a bind. Vietnam must decide whether to pay for expensive LNG imports, jeopardizing its high-tech goals, or abandon them.
