Nepal to Import 1100 MW Electricity from India Amidst Damaged Hydropower Projects

Nepal has decided to import 1100 MW of electricity from India between December 2026 and May 2027. This decision comes after recent floods and heavy rains damaged several of Nepal's hydropower projects, impacting production. Nepal's electricity system heavily relies on hydropower, which experiences seasonal fluctuations due to river water levels. When domestic production falls short of demand, Nepal imports power, and when it exceeds demand, Nepal exports electricity to India. This agreement aims to meet Nepal's energy needs during peak demand periods, particularly from February to May.
