African Grandmothers Become Solar Engineers, Bringing Light to Thousands

Times of India - India · india

Rural African mothers and grandmothers, many with little formal education, are transforming their communities by becoming solar engineers. Through India's Barefoot College Solar Mamas programme, these women learn to assemble, install, and repair solar lighting systems. This initiative has trained 1,708 women from 96 countries, bringing electricity to over 75,000 households and significantly reducing reliance on kerosene lamps. The practical, hands-on training empowers women from marginalised backgrounds, enabling them to provide essential services and improve daily life in their villages.
