Zoe Kazan's new Netflix adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novel, East of Eden, offers a fresh perspective on the character of Cathy Ames. Florence Pugh delivers a sensational performance as Cathy, a woman often described as a monster. The seven-episode series remains faithful to the text while daring to explore Cathy's complex, feminist backstory, a departure from the original novel. Kazan's adaptation grounds Cathy as a woman and survivor, focusing on her fight for agency and survival.
