The Indian government is facing challenges in designing old-age protection schemes for gig, platform, and unorganised workers, a government official stated. This is a new area with no global precedent, as traditional old-age protection relies on contributory pension schemes. The official noted that while most gig workers are young, the aim is to secure both their present and future. The Code on Social Security, 2020, allows for such schemes, funded partly by aggregators contributing a percentage of their turnover.
