305 Underground-Surviving Plant Species Found in Western Ghats, 81 Are Endemic

Times of India · environment

Researchers have identified 305 geophyte plant species in the Northern Western Ghats and Konkan region, known for their ability to survive harsh conditions by storing nutrients underground. Of these, 81 species are found exclusively in this area, highlighting the region's unique and under-documented biodiversity. The study, published in 'Phytotaxa', emphasizes the need to protect these habitats from development. Geophytes survive dry seasons through underground structures like bulbs and tubers, with flowering often linked to the monsoon. The distinct geography and isolated habitats contribute to the evolution of endemic species.
