A woman has reportedly died of plague in Russia's remote Irkutsk region, with governor Alexei Tsydenov announcing the news. Russian media identified her as a 28-year-old lab technician who may have contracted pneumonic plague after a test tube broke. Around 200 of her contacts have been placed under quarantine, though Russian authorities have not confirmed these details. Plague, caused by Yersinia pestis bacteria, can be fatal if not treated early, especially the pneumonic form which can spread between people.
