Nobel Peace Prize winner Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay, an 85-year-old South African jurist, revealed that her grandparents were shipped from India as indentured labourers. They worked on sugarcane plantations, a life Mahatma Gandhi described as little better than slavery. Pillay, a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, comes from a family of Tamil origin and was born in Durban in 1941. Her grandparents were among hundreds of thousands of Indians moved by the British Empire to Africa as contract labourers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
